Less Rain, Dollar Down, Burkina Faso Cotton Production Halving

Less Rain And Lower Dollar Led To Half Of Cotton Production In Burkina Faso.

Burkina Faso's largest textile company said on Thursday that cotton production in Burkina Faso nearly halved last year due to too little rainfall and a sharp decline in the US dollar.

The depreciation of the US dollar has led to a sharp fall in cotton export prices, and some European Union countries have provided subsidies to farmers. The planting area of American cotton growers is less than 20% of the previous year.

Cotton is the export crop of Burkina Faso countries. It exported 560000 tons of cotton in 2006 to 07 years, and reduced 45% to 2007 tons in 2007 to 08 years. Therefore, the inland West African country lost its status as a big cotton country in the region.

In 2005 to 2006, cotton production recorded a record of 700000 tons.

Earlier this month, Burkina Faso went on strike to protest against rising prices of daily necessities.
